Logline : A glimpse into the live music industry, and how difficult it can be for women and minorities to grow, and work in that environment.

Deliverable: video essay with a voice over

ACT I: Introduction to the live music scene

Show the highlights and the “fun” lense of music and concert showbiz:
Picture this. The venue is steadily filling up. Bundles of people swarm in, reminding staff that showtime is steadily approaching. The sea of audience chatter loudly awaiting the band. Eventually, when the band claims the stage, all is expected to sound amazing. Leading to an unforgettable night for the audience. The booming sounds of the drums and bass will buzz below your feet, and the echoing sounds of the singer will touch your soul. A live concert is a truly unforgettable experience thanks to the sound engineers that spend hours preparing and ensuring quality of sound.
Defining the topic (Main thesis):
It is no secret that the tech industry, like most industries in our patriarchal society, tends to be a difficult place for women and minorities to get their foot in the door, and access the same opportunities as others. But what happens when the workplace isn't your typical workplace? When the workplace is a stage, and the opportunities are only based on who you know. There is no HR to report misconduct, and you are your only advocate.
The live music scene is drenched in the ever changing cultures and ideals of its continuous waves of music scenes from its past. and In some cases, the music industry holds on to these old and outdated stereotypes about race and gender, making it difficult for certain people to get their foot in the door.

ACT II: Introduce main characters
Follow the experiences of young audio engineers :
I know several female/POC audio engineers that have a lot to say about their experiences being an audio engineer.
(Work in Progress):  I will be interviewing 4 people who are working audio engineers in the local austin music industry. I will ask them about their experiences as emerging audio engineers, and how they got their foot in the door, as well as how they have observed the differences between their experiences and the experiences of those around them.
Finally, segue to the conclusion by asking them what they think could help bring more of a accepting and diverse environment to the live music industry

Interview questions:
First off
 What's your name?
What's your age?
What do you do at your job?

Tell me the story of how you got interested in audio engineering

Do you ever feel discouraged working in this field?

When do you feel this way?

Why do you think femme-presenting people, and people of color share the same experiences working in this industry?

Do you think this will get better? How can we make it better?

Thank you!

ACT III: Focus on the future
Are the times changing? :
There are many orgs, and societies that specifically advocate for women and POC in the music industry. They help women and poc get hired by major AV companies and professional staff within the community.
Talk about:

Facebook groups : sound gals, women in stem, coding girls, etc.
(working conclusion): Next time you enjoy a concert, notice the crew and background members that work there. Is it a diverse environment? Is it a welcoming community?

It is no secret that the tech industry, like most industries in our patriarchal society, tends to be a difficult place for women and minorities to get their foot in the door, and access the same opportunities as others.
